Databases and Information Systems

General Information

Overview

Many everyday applications depend on organising large collections of data and making useful information easy to find. This course explores how databases and information systems address these issues. It starts by introducing the principles of relational databases, showing how to design tables, represent relationships, and use SQL to extract and combine information. Students explore how database systems execute queries and how indexing and query optimization improve performance. Building on these foundations, the course also examines how search systems find and rank relevant information. Interactive websites bring these components together, allowing users to explore data easier

Learning Objective

Students learn to design relational databases, write SQL queries, understand efficient query processing, and build simple webpages for presenting data

Format

The course will be taught in person. Exercises are voluntary but highly recommended. There will be no exercise sessions. GitHub Classroom will be used for the exercises, and students who submit in time will receive feedback
